Cabinet approves updated Climate Change
Strategy 2024 - 2030

Following publication of the
Council Plan 2023 – 2027, the Climate Change Strategy has been updated to
better reflect the Council’s vision and priorities for the District. The
revised Strategy for 2024 - 2030 was approved by Cabinet on 28/04/2024.

Changes include the strapline –
Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - emphasising the need for behavioural change, revisited
themes, which now include a focus on tackling pollution and a new monitoring
and reporting approach which will aid transparency and cohesiveness.

Council Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, Cllr Stephen Pickering, said
“Climate Change is an important issue for the Council and the updated Climate
Change Strategy reflects this, demonstrating our commitment to fight the negative
impacts of the climate change, cut our CO2 emissions and enhance the
biodiversity of our District for the benefit of everyone.”

are pleased to see NEDDC remain committed to taking positive action to mitigate
Climate Change and engage with us on its revised Strategy. We look forward to

2024 – 2030 will be underpinned by the Climate Change Action Plan which is
currently being developed and, once completed, will be published on our website.

One of the must-visit places in Ouarzazate is Ksar Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Dades Gorge is known for its unique rock formations, while the Todra Gorge is famous for its towering cliffs and crystal-clear water. Ian Judson who runs the project keeps us updated.

Art &amp; Minds still has a home in the village but in the last 12 months we have moved from our previous base on Bridge Street to our new premises across the road at 46 Bridge Street, which was previously the Barber’s shop next to the Post Office.

As before, we have transformed the old Barber’s shop into a creative and well-being studio which I hope everyone will come and see.

We still have the garage, workshop and community gardens to the rear of the new hub and they are still going strong since we opened them over 3 years ago.

As in previous years we are growing plants and these will be available to buy after Easter when they are ready.  So come along and see what we have to offer.

Ruby Webb, who attends our project, has been producing lots of items showcasing her art skills and she donates them to the Barnardos and Ashgate charity shops in our village to help with their fundraising.  Do come along and see her work and perhaps buy a piece of her artwork.

Everyone is welcome to come along and say hello.  Our project continues to help so many people with their mental health and loneliness.

We are open to all ages and the friendship and support for each other is amazing.

So come along and say hello – perhaps you could learn a new skill or craft.  Or, of course, you can come along as a volunteer.  You will be made very welcome.

An Announcement From The Art & Minds Project In Killamarsh

They were the opening lines of Director Luke Mullins notes, as The City Players attempted to push the boundaries of what theatre can do, in their latest play ‘The Revival.’

A ghost story written by award winning actor and playwright James Cawood, this spine chilling mystery sees a director revive an old play in the very theatre where the writer committed suicide.

Beginning with an open curtain where the seating audience are invited to see the actors lounging on the set, this play makes a marked difference at The Corner Playhouse.

We’re sucked into the performance from the get-go and the 3rd wall was instantly broken, hinting at what was about to come in this two act story..

The actors are gathered for the final rehearsal before opening night of the play, Scared To Death. They argue about some who can’t remember their lines, the director becomes more agitated, and the strange occurrences begin to take hold.

Before long, the cast find themselves caught up in a terrifyingly real ghost story, that at times spills off the theatre stage, and into the audience!

This was a real pleasure for me. The breaking of the 3rd wall, the open curtains, the play entering the crowd, and the story of a supernatural curse. From taking my seat, I knew it was my kind of production.

This new, and innovative style, brought new light to The Players who have gone through some recent changes behind the scenes.

Rehearsals must have been thorough, as the cast really held everything together, and what could have been instantly confusing, was turned into a coherent narrative.

The set, as always, was impeccably built, the sound and lighting was noticeably appropriate for the mood of the play, and it felt from being sat in the audience, that the director had liberated the actors to breath into the production.

Classically Spooky

Following the enforcement action taken by North East Derbyshire District Council to close two sites in West Handley and Ridgeway, the Council also made injunction applications against individuals who had been engaged in anti-social behaviour (ASB) and were successful in their outcome.

The application was heard before His Honour Judge Owen at Chesterfield County Court over two days in September.

The Judge found that the Council’s witnesses were “credible and honest” and accepted all their evidence presented in relation to the ASB caused at West Handley Village and Ridgeway. The Judge also heard from, as he described, “brave” residents and also accepted their evidence, deeming them to be credible witnesses.

The Court ordered that two individuals who were guilty of ASB are excluded from the West Handley village for a period of 12 months.

A power of arrest is also attached to this exclusion, meaning that if the individuals breach those terms, the police can arrest them and can be committed to prison for up to 2 years.

A further injunction order and power of arrest was also made in respect of a third individual who is still allowed to enter the village.

North East Derbyshire District Council Leader, Cllr Nigel Barker said, “I cannot thank our officers enough for the work hey have put in to secure these injunctions. We made a commitment as an administration to come down hard on those participating in anti-social behaviour and this successful outcome show’s our commitment to delivering this.

Successful injunction for North East Derbyshire District Council as residents causing ASB are banned from village

Planning permission has been secured for the £5.5m upgrade to Rother Valley Country Park in Rotherham - the centrepiece being a new waterfront café.

With funding from the Government's Levelling Up Fund, £19.9m was awarded to Rotherham Council for a number of connected projects which aim to build a new leisure industry that responds to the challenges of economic recovery and health and well-being.

The plans for a new village centre have been drawn up by AHR Architects and ELG Planning Consultants and include the erection of a waterfront café building with function space to the first floor, the relocation of existing car parking to create a multi-use public open space, the creation of a new play area, the demolition of existing Rangers' bungalow and relocation of Rangers' compound and cycle hub, along with landscaping improvements and other associated infrastructure.

The much smaller existing café in the courtyard is set to remain but will focus on "grab and go" takeaway options.

The new café will have a seating capacity of 134 offering beautiful views over the lake. The seating area is also dual aspect - the café space looks over the new play area to the rear, creating a safer place for parents to watch while their children play.

The building would be constructed in a mix of charred timber, gabion walling and copper coloured anodised aluminium. Carbon neutral and locally sourced materials will also be utilised.

The site is within the Greenbelt and planners concluded: "The proposed new café will evidently significantly enhance the ancillary facilities supporting the overall function of the country park and will positively align with the key objective set out within the LPA’s [Rotherham Council's] Cultural Strategy (2019 -2016) of improving facilities at the Country Park.

"The proposed development will also enhance the attractiveness of the country park as a destination for outdoor recreation and will clearly support the LPA’s stated goal to “enable everyone to get active, get creative and get outdoors, more often.

"It is therefore considered that a new café building, and function space is an appropriate facility for outdoor recreation, as its presence will encourage visitors to the park, thus encouraging outdoor recreation in line with the LPA’s overarching strategic objectives. The existing café provides a practical and functional link to the well-established country park and the replacement café will be a continuation of this function."

Plans approved for Rother Valley revamp

The RSPCA and the National Emergency Services Museum has unveiled an exciting interactive exhibition to celebrate the animal welfare charity’s 200th anniversary next year.

This new mini-exhibition, which showcases the life-saving work of the charity over two centuries, has opened at Sheffield’s National Emergency Services Museum. 

It stands alongside exhibits featuring the work of other emergency services such the police, fire, ambulance service along with the RNLI and HM Coastguard. 

The animal welfare charity hopes the exciting interactive display will form a key part of the educational experience offered by the museum in West Bar which is visited by 36,000 people each year. About 5,000 visitors are primary school students who are studying their ‘People who help us’ Key Stage 1 course and this forms a vital part of their education.

As well as informing visitors about the work of the RSPCA, youngsters are also encouraged to try their hand at rescuing a sheep from a cliff, dress up as an inspector, check which animals have been microchipped and identify animals hidden in boxes by touch.

The initiative was set up by the charity’s heritage project manager Phil Browning as part of the RSPCA’s 200 year celebrations taking place next year.

Geoff Edmond, the charity’s lead wildlife officer who is based in Yorkshire and attended the opening, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the RSPCA to showcase some of the amazing work we do to save animals over our 199 years in existence - ahead of next year’s milestone.

“We are keen to promote animal welfare to young people and with 36,000 visitors a year - who are mainly young people and families - we believe this will help spread the message far and wide.

“It is also great to be exhibiting alongside the police and fire service who we work with on a daily basis on many rescues and investigations.”

Matt Wakefield, chief executive at the independent museum, said: “We are delighted to host the RSPCA in our museum celebrating the fantastic work of our emergency services over the hundreds of years.

“We do get lots of school children visiting us from all over Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Derbyshire as part of their school studies and they all love the interactive elements and learning about the history of the emergency services.

“The RSPCA is the leading emergency services for animals so it is great to show the depth of their life-saving work.

One of the young people who had a sneak preview of the exhibition was Eric McCarthy, who had travelled with his mum Fiona from Manchester, to visit the museum.

He said: “I love animals and rescue work and found this great fun. I enjoyed dressing up in the RSPCA uniform and pulling a sheep to safety. I want to be a vet when I grow up and help animals.”

Ruth Fletcher, from the Manor area of Sheffield, was visiting the attraction with children Leland (13), Theo (14) and Hannah (19).

She said: “We are all interested in animal welfare and were keen to come along and see a bit more about the work the RSPCA do. It is a fun way for the children to learn as it is so interactive. 

“Leland wants to work in one of the emergency services when he is older so this was great for him to find out more and he really enjoyed the displays.”

As part of the exhibition an RSPCA horse ambulance is on display along with other old emergency service vehicles.

The horse ambulance, loaned by a private collector (pictured), was among many which were instrumental in caring for horses in World War I which were vital to Britain’s efforts on the front line.

As many as 8 million horses were killed during the conflict and many more served, often in the worst conditions. The RSPCA launched the Fund for Sick and Wounded Horses - a campaign to raise money to buy horse ambulances for the front line as well as fund veterinary support overseas.

Since 1824, the RSPCA has worked to prevent cruelty, promote kindness towards, and reduce the suffering of animals. The charity’s vision is of a caring world in which all animals are respected and treated with compassion.

The charity - the oldest and largest animal welfare charity in the UK, will be hosting a number of celebrations next year to mark its  200th anniversary and will provide an opportunity to reflect on the organisation's founding and celebrate its life-saving rescue and campaign work.

UK's biggest charity ice bath competition coming to R1se, Sheffield!

To mark Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) Awareness Week, we are putting the spotlight on our ASB Heroes – those who help to make a real difference to keeping our communities safe.

One example of ASB Heroes here in Chesterfield is the team behind the ‘Boots on the Ground’ project, an initiative designed to provide different engagement opportunities for young people.

The project, operated by Chesterfield Football Club Community Trust, has been active within Chesterfield for the past 15 Months and is making a dramatic difference to vulnerable young people in the town.

Boots on the ground provides young people with a number of opportunities and events that can help them feel valued, build confidence and engage young people in positive activities enabling them to make positive choices. The project also provides one-to-one support for young people, offering them a ‘safe space’ where they can get the guidance they need.

A new hub has also launched earlier this week at Lower Pavements named Spireites Youth Hub. The hubs aim is to offer diversionary activities and opportunities to young people, with daily sessions held Monday to Thursday’s each week, between 3:30pm and 5:45pm . This is an opportunity for young people to book on to a wide variety of sessions - ranging from online learning opportunities, art, wellbeing, ASB workshops and social sessions. Drop-in sessions for signposting and advice are also available on Friday’s between 10am and 5:30pm.

The programme also has ambitious plans to develop its offer to young people in Chesterfield by developing citizenship programmes, training and educational inputs relating to safeguarding and the violence against women and girl’s agenda.

Chesterfield Borough Council is the main funding partner of Boots on the Ground, and the programme directly contributes to achieving one of the priorities set out in our anti-social behaviour strategy - developing diversionary activity and engagement with young people in Chesterfield.

Arctic Monkeys’ two huge hometown gigs brought an estimated £4.1million economic benefit to the city, new figures from Sheffield City Council reveal.

The gigs saw 74,000 people visit Hillsborough Park for two nights of shows from the band, who are originally from High Green and became Sheffield music royalty after releasing five hugely successful albums. Money spent on hotels, food and drink, and transport contributed to a boost for Hillsborough and Sheffield as people travelled from across the world to visit the city for the gigs.

As well as visiting Hillsborough for the shows, Arctic Monkeys fans enjoyed visiting famous locations from the band’s early career. The Grapes pub, where the band played some of their first live shows, is a must see stop on their pilgrimage to Sheffield for many fans.

Councillor Martin Smith, Economic Development and Skills Committee Chair, said:&nbsp;“It was fantastic to welcome Arctic Monkeys home for two gigs at Hillsborough Park earlier in June. With 74,000 fans attending, some on foot from neighbouring streets and others who had flown across the world to visit our city for the shows, it was a brilliant weekend.

“The boost for local businesses is huge, with an estimated £4.1 million pumped into the city over the weekend. Businesses in Hillsborough, particularly food and drink venues, benefitted from fans enjoying the day and in the city centre, and we saw an uplift in hotel bookings and footfall during the weekend. These events go to show how beneficial large-scale shows can be for Sheffield, bringing both entertainment and economic benefits to the city. It was brilliant to have the band back in the city and we’re looking forward to Tramlines at Hillsborough Park next month.” &nbsp;

The gigs kick off a summer of events, with Tramlines returning to the park from 21 – 23 July. To reduce the impact on Hillsborough Park, the council has been carrying out maintenance before the Arctic Monkeys shows, including investing in a new path network.

During the weekend there was minimal damage to the park which has been returned to its original condition, with repairs paid for by SJM Concerts. The council is continuing to look after the park, ensuring it is in good condition ready for Tramlines later in July. After the festival, the council will again work with Tramlines to ensure the park is once again returned to its best condition for local residents and visitors from across the city to enjoy.&nbsp;

Councillor Smith said:&nbsp;“Thanks to hard work and preparation from the council team, Hillsborough Park only needed some minor repairs after the shows. Thank you to locals for their patience as we return the park to normal and to the teams on the ground making sure Hillsborough Park is looking its best again after the event.”

Janine Lawson from the Hillsborough Tap and the business group Hillsborough Together, said:&nbsp;“The recent concerts in the park were a great boost for us at Hillsborough Tap during what is historically a quiet period in the Hillsborough area. It’s great to see so many new visitors to the area and it allows us to showcase what an amazing area Hillsborough is. The feedback we received from visitors was fantastic and it was great that so many people loved our little business as much as we do! We hope that this will create repeat business for us in a time that is very difficult for independent businesses like ours.”

Arctic Monkeys gigs see £4.1 million boost to Sheffield’s economy

The man who died in a serious collision at Ridgeway has been named, and a man has been charged in connection with the crash.

Jordan Sheehy, who is from the Doncaster area, was travelling in a Vauxhall Mokka on the B6388 High Lane when the collision took place just after 1.40pm on Saturday 1 July.

The 26-year-old died at the scene, and his family are aware and are being supported by Family Liaison Officers.

They have also released a picture of Jordan, which we have published with their permission.

A 30-year-old man has now been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop after a collision and driving without insurance or the correct licence.

Kyle Buckley, from Eckington, appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court today (Wednesday 5 July) and was remanded into prison custody pending a trial at a later date.
